The second round of the powercross series had it all, extreme heat and humidity, a track that was full of rubbish mixed in with the dirt, 2 sections of the stage collapsed and the two big international riders were disqualified at the end of their 4 x 7 lap races which led to a protest to the rules.
The day was hot and humid and no one was r eally in the mood of standing in the sun, so we tried to spend as much time in the Hotel Santika which was actually quite close to the track. We did head down to the track early to make sure the ramp was fine since the 4-piece ramp has been cut and welded but the wrong place was cut so it sits wrong and we have to dig a 6 inch deep hole in the ground and also the hinges fall out so we didn't want a repeat performance of the Malang round.
The track was looking really good but the dirt came from the side of a river bank where the locals obviously throw all their rubbish in to. Well that would have been ok, but the Indonesian loader driver who doesn't know about building tracks was just picking it all up and sending it in on trucks. The Aussie track builders had a nightmare of a job grooming the track because the rubbish wouldn't pack down and made it impossible to get the course smooth.
Lewis Woods and Mason Phillips went through qualifying and even with Mason dropping his bike in a slippery corner and snapping his clutch lever he still managed to make the Power to Power shootout with only one good lap.
We the had to do our first press conference at the front of the event where a massive crowd gathered to get photo's and autographs. The funny thing was the little stage and backdrop actually had a massive Surya 12 Powercross banner with lifesize images of me and Kim Ash-can. If I had known the photo I sent over email was for that I would have at least smiled haha.
Show time, and it was my job to play the drums as the introduction to the whole night on stage. As Josh and Clinton were introduced I was doing all the background beats and then had my own 45 second solo on stage. That part was awesome and I the last time I'll be a rock star! But it got messy real quick. One part of the stage actually collapsed where the dancer girls were sitting. They were all ok, except one who didn't want to come back up on stage to finish her routine. And about 10 minutes later on the other side of the stage another part collapsed! I couldn't believe it. I knew the stage swayed a little and it looked a bit unstable but couldn't believe it was collapsing under us. Someone forgot to zippie-tie a few spots I think.
Then it was straight on for the show, Sheeny, Clinton and I had a really good show on the poppy ramp and finished up with a train and the boys flipping with all the pyrotechnics going off. We were just hoping the pyrotechnics went off AFTER we landed, not before or it would have gotten interesting.
The main event kicked off with Lewis and Mason looking to take 1 and 2 places. Lewis won 2 races and crashed 2, Mason got a solid 3, 2, 2, 2 placings but in the end the boys were disqualified because they accepted water from an outside person. To add controversy to it, everybody on the starting line did it. So if they were playing fair they would have disqualified everyone. Also riders had no numbers, or no back numbers, or numbers that didn't match up. So for all their hard work the boys have put in a protest and are awaiting to see what the results actually are since it's an FIM event.
I'm now off to the airport so I'll leave you with it. I'll get some nice happy snaps from Bali for the week I'm there.
Have a Merry Xmas and Happy New Year
