bikes-at-malangWith the first round of the Powercross series completely in the air and no one knowing what was going to happen next, there were a few people in the background making it work. Mr. Judiarto decided if the stadium wasn’t going to come around to their agreement, then they would have to find a new place to stage the event.

There was to be 20,000 people, TVOne live coverage into Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, India and China... it was huge and the event couldn’t just crumble. Kim Ashkenazi and his good mate Adam Blackwell were working absolutely overtime building a new course in a vacant block of land next door to the stadium which made things a little easier. The excavator and loader didn’t have to be moved far, and the advertising still meant people had to come to that area and not try and get a crowd to move to a new part of Malang at such short notice.

The track was built out of the ground since there was barely any dirt. All of the jumps were dug into the ground and the landings were up higher except for the rhythm section. They had enough dirt to bring in from the stadium onto the vacant block to also build our freestyle downramp which was on the smaller size, but it got the job done. The boys were up from 3:30am until 10pm building the course and we definitely take our hats off to them for their efforts!malang-track2

While they were building the course, the riders had a chance to finally relax after all the travelling and we headed up to the water park. It’s no Wet and Wild on the Gold Coast, but what it lacked in innovative slides it made up in back-slapping high dives and one of the best views from the top of the mountain overlooking the steep densely forested mountains in the foreground and the sun setting just behind them. And of course we finished the day with a couple of local beers called ‘Bintang’. It’s not a bad drop either.
