One of the most exciting competitions in the Southern Hemisphere is taking place just before the year's end and I'll be making the hop straight from Indonesian shows over to New Zealand to compete at the Red Bull FMX Battle.

Red Bull’s FMX Battle is taking the sport of Freestyle Motocross (FMX) to the next level here in New Zealand with the head-to-head competition format.  Embarking on Wanganui soil in the Cooks Garden Stadium, December 28^th will mark the breathtaking show with the New Zealand FMX Championship title to be claimed at the end of the evening.

The competition will take place with riders taking a short timed slot in the show to pull off their best tricks, scoring points to get themselves through to the next round.  Each round will see one rider eliminated until the final two riders will face each other for the grand finale.  The timed slots for the rider’s means they’re under greater pressure to fit more and better tricks into their performance than show formats that we’ve seen in New Zealand previously. 

‘Our goal for this event is to leave the fans with lasting memories, and we believe we can accomplish this through the head-to-head format as it creates a tense and exciting atmosphere’ commented event coordinator ‘Scary’ Mary Perkins.

Perkins will be heading up the show’s production and is excited to work with the new head-to-head format.  ‘I’m glad I took time to learn about the production side of things when touring and riding in events such as the Crusty Demons.  I have always been interested in the production side and knew it would be a great help one day.’

This head-to-head competition format has created success for other FMX competitions abroad such as the Red Bull X-Fighters.  Recent FMX sensation Levi Sherwood has been successful with this format, taking out the first round of the Red Bull X-Fighters competition in Mexico earlier this year.

‘I think the head-to-head format creates an amazing atmosphere and the riders perform better and really push their boundaries.  I am very excited about this event - I know it will be the start of good things for the sport here in New Zealand’ says Levi Sherwood.

The competing riders will have a chance to practice during the day ready to put their skills to the test in the three hour evening show.  Big TV screens and blasting sounds will be just a taste of what the evening will bring to spectators.  The show will be kicking off at 6pm, and more information on the event can be found at www.raceweek.co.nz.
