I started the week up at Clinton Moore's, watching him come up with some new tricks for his X-Fighters and X Games debut, and let me tell you, he's making some of the tricks look too easy! But after heading back to the Sommy Farm to ride for the rest of the weekend, Schuie rang to say we had a chance to go see the property where the trail bike park would be built. So I packed up and headed back to Boonah to see what there was...
I drove through the night after watching one of the best State of Origin's on Wednesday night to get back to Brisbane at about 1am, and then waking up early to drive to Boonah for a 9:30 meeting at the bike park.
Schuie managed to pick up a couple of bikes for us to ride, as our KTM's would probably foul plugs just putting around a property in first gear for 3 hours. What he came up with was Gary's KTM 250SX-F which I called first, and Matt was relegated to Lynchie's Husky TE510. It turns out the big girl was pretty heavy and with a sticky clutch it made for some comedic value! Schuie even had the helmet mounted Sports Camera on his noggin which captured some of the hilarity. After following our tour guide, Grant, who is the only person to have marked out the 800 hectare property, Schuie and I were getting a little anxious and wanted to do a bit of riding, so when there was a termite mound that Schuie thought he could bunny hop over, it all went pear shaped with the big 510 took a nose heavy turn to the right while he was 5 feet off the ground, I could see the tree coming up fast, but not as fast as Schuie was seeing it by hitting it head on.
As for the property - well, this bike park looks like it could be a great addition to South East Queenslands riding areas! It's pretty damn big and the trails will actually be a lot of fun. Lots of different terrain to use, and although there are obviously more people than us going for tender, it's what the different operator's can put in place that will secure the job. We can't really give to much away about it, but simply put - it looks good, but A LOT of work.
After a couple of hours bashing around the bush, smashing rocks and hopping over logs, we headed back to Schuie's to enjoy a snifter of port... I think his idea of a heavy beer or two was to convince me the next day to build some new jumps. You can't really say no when a mate offers a nice cold beer at the end of a big ride.
Once again, not much can be said about the jumps, there is some big plans with the jumps we were building, and to be honest - I'm excited to see the end result. The jumps look like a 10-pack, but they won't be used for what you think... you'll just have to see the photo's and video coming out of it with the new big project.
I spent the day in the loader carting dirt backwards and forwards while Schuie was pulling nice clay out of the ground with the D7 and then sculpting the perfect up and downramps. Definitely providing the right 'Moto Solutions'. Schuie has been building for a few days already, we both put in a day yesterday and there's still a couple of day work to go. So to put it in perspective, it'll be a huge project!
So for now, here's a couple of photo's and I'm heading off for a MTB ride down Mt Cootha with Ryan, Smakker and big Sturto.. check back for a helmet cam video from that one! |
