Allan Hardy from Unit was lucky enough to capture the impact I had with Dan Frew mid-air at the Red Bull / Jim Beam Farm Jam 2010 and the consequences of hitting the ground from an 85ft jump. You can view the video right here to see Steve cartwheel down the downramp!
This is one of the very very few times I've had footage of crashing. Some guys always get footage, but not me. Usually it's a doozie though, like the last one with at the HGMtv film shoot in the Lancelin sand dunes where I went 100ft without a dirt bike.
This time, I collided mid-air with Dan Frew during a whip train as we were filming for the 2010 Farm Jam. Through no fault of our own, it was merely an accident that I wish never happened.
I was jumping the 85ft ramp and Dan was jumping the 75ft ramp. He whips one way towards me, and I whip the other way, which... goes towards Dan. Unfortunately his ramp washes alot of speed off compared the ramp I was jumping so the 10ft gap we had between each other was shortened real quick when I noticed I was about to land on top of him. You can see mid-air that I tapped the side of his bike and it was enough for my front wheel to go out. I'm just SO glad that Dan got out of it ok, because he didn't know it was coming being in front and all. I had the REALLY bad feeling of being behind and seeing it all happen in slow-mo and wishing I could have replayed. Before I knew it though I was getting ragdolled into the dirt and sliding on my brand new Fox Carbon Fibre helmet. And to tell you the truth it was my first ever wear of the brand new helmet and I'm glad it was the Carbon Fibre one. I knocked my head real hard, forgetting most of the night but it could have been alot worse with a standard helmet.
Check out 2:19 where my short and brief segment starts for the crash. The rest of the competition was freaking awesome though and I wish I could have made it there rather I spent Saturday sitting with Nick Franklin who injured himself the day before I did and we watched on together.
Now I'm resting up at home with Q-Magnets on to help reduce swelling and bruising and Brad from GB Orthopaedics helping to get me a surgeon!
